As a physicist with the quantum technology manufacturer ColdQuanta in Boulder, Colorado, Andrew Kortyna conducts research and spearheads development on an atomic clock project that employs laser-cooled atoms. When he isn’t working, Andrew Kortyna is an avid hiker.

Many local authorities place the First and Second Flatirons Hike near the top of the list of best nature trails in the greater Boulder area. Located in Chautauqua Park just south of Boulder, this trail covers roughly 2.5 miles and offers great views of several nearby flatirons (sharp, triangular geological ridges). It also ascends the First Flatiron and runs along a ridge to the Second Flatiron.

At the back side of the First Flatiron, hikers can rock scramble to a niche that offers exceptional views of the Rocky Mountains to the west. At the top of the Second Flatiron, hikers can take in scenic vistas of Boulder and the terra cotta roofs of the city’s University of Colorado campus.
